McChrystal's Star Gazer has a medium-fine grind with slight moisture and uses Wilson's of Sharrow's standard base blend of burley and flue-cured tobacco with oriental stem. The primary note is anise, accompanied by black liquorice, fennel, coriander, and cardamom. The sweet anisette scent sits over the mild tobacco base.

The nicotine strength is low to medium. The colour is mid-brown. This snuff was previously known as Anisette before EU regulations required the name change, and it contains no menthol, allowing the liquorice and spice notes to come through clearly.

McChrystal's Star Gazer presents a medium-fine grind with a tan tobacco base that leans toward the darker end of the spectrum. The scenting centres on anise with supporting notes of licorice and warming spices, creating a profile reminiscent of traditional baking spices or pan dulce. The anise character dominates the initial experience before settling to reveal the underlying tobacco and wheat notes.

The moisture level sits in McChrystal's typical range, showing some minor clumping in the tin while remaining on the drier side of moderate. This consistency, combined with the medium-fine grind, makes the snuff manageable for beginners and suitable for extended use throughout the day. The nicotine delivery remains medium-low, with the anise scenting providing a mild anaesthetic quality that masks any nasal burn.

The scenting profile draws comparisons to herbal and old-world style snuffs, appealing particularly to those who favour traditional aromatic blends. However, the medium-fine grind coupled with moderate moisture can make the snuff prone to spilling from an anatomical snuffbox, requiring more careful handling. Additionally, the forward anise character may prove overwhelming for users who prefer subtly scented tobaccos or those unaccustomed to pronounced liquorice notes.
